Boötes is a large northern constellation dominated by the brilliant orange star Arcturus, the fourth brightest star in the sky. The constellation's kite-like shape is easy to find by following the arc of the Big Dipper's handle. The Boötes void, one of the largest known voids in the universe, lies in this direction.

Boötes is best observed during June. It is located in the NQ3 quadrant and is primarily visible from the northern hemisphere. The constellation contains 7 main stars forming its asterism, with 29 Bayer/Flamsteed designated stars in total. Its brightest star is Arcturus.
Mythology & History
Boötes is traditionally identified as a herdsman or plowman. In Greek mythology, he is sometimes associated with Arcas, son of Zeus and Callisto, placed in the sky near his mother Ursa Major. Another tradition identifies him as Icarius, taught winemaking by Dionysus. He follows Ursa Major around the pole, hence his title the Bear Driver.
