Centaurus is one of the largest constellations in the sky, containing Alpha Centauri, the closest star system to the Sun at 4.37 light-years. The constellation also hosts the spectacular globular cluster Omega Centauri (NGC 5139), the largest and brightest globular cluster visible from Earth.

When to Observe
Centaurus is best observed during May. It is located in the SQ3 quadrant and is primarily visible from the southern hemisphere. The constellation contains 11 main stars forming its asterism, with 69 Bayer/Flamsteed designated stars in total. Its brightest star is Rigil Kentaurus.
Mythology & History
In Greek mythology, Centaurus represents Chiron, the wisest and most just of all centaurs. Unlike other centaurs, Chiron was civilized, learned in medicine and music, and tutored heroes like Achilles, Jason, and Asclepius. When accidentally wounded by a poisoned arrow, he gave up his immortality and was placed among the stars by Zeus.
