Coma Berenices is a northern constellation notable for the Coma Star Cluster (Melotte 111), a large nearby open cluster visible to the naked eye. The constellation also contains the northern part of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies. The north galactic pole lies within its boundaries.

Mythology & History

Coma Berenices is named after the historical Queen Berenice II of Egypt, who vowed to sacrifice her beautiful hair to Aphrodite if her husband Ptolemy III returned safely from war. When the hair disappeared from the temple, the court astronomer Conon of Samos declared the gods had placed it among the stars.
