Hercules

Hercules is the fifth largest constellation, easily identified by its Keystone asterism. It contains M13, the Great Hercules Cluster, one of the brightest globular clusters in the northern sky. M92, another fine globular cluster, also lies within its borders.

When to Observe

Hercules is best observed during July. It is located in the NQ3 quadrant and is primarily visible from the northern hemisphere. The constellation contains 14 main stars forming its asterism, with 50 Bayer/Flamsteed designated stars in total. Its brightest star is Kornephoros.

Mythology & History

In Greek mythology, Hercules represents the greatest of all heroes, son of Zeus and Alcmene. He was famed for his incredible strength and twelve labors, which included slaying the Nemean Lion (Leo) and the Lernaean Hydra (Hydra). The constellation is depicted with Hercules kneeling, his foot on the head of Draco.
