Scutum is the fifth smallest constellation. Despite its small size, it lies in one of the brightest parts of the Milky Way and contains the Wild Duck Cluster (M11), one of the richest open clusters known. The Scutum Star Cloud is one of the most prominent Milky Way star clouds.

Scutum is best observed during August. It is located in the SQ4 quadrant and is primarily visible from the southern hemisphere. The constellation contains 2 main stars forming its asterism, with 7 Bayer/Flamsteed designated stars in total. Its brightest star is Alpha Scuti.

Mythology & History

Scutum was created by Johannes Hevelius in 1684 as Scutum Sobiescianum (Sobieski's Shield), honoring Polish King John III Sobieski for his victory at the Battle of Vienna in 1683. It is the only constellation honoring a specific historical figure still recognized by the IAU.
