About the Waxing Crescent Phase

A thin sliver of the Moon becomes visible on the right side (in the Northern Hemisphere) as it moves away from the Sun in our sky. The illuminated portion grows each night. The term 'waxing' means growing or increasing. This phase is visible in the western sky after sunset.
